About the event
Northwest Coastal carving is deeply tied to Coast Salish cultural identity — expressing community, lineage, and a profound connection to the natural world. In this beginner-friendly workshop led by artist D’arcy Basil (Secwepemc), participants will learn traditional carving techniques while creating their own cedar feather sculpture to take home.
Throughout the session, D’arcy will introduce the use of carving tools such as knives, chisels, and adzes, and share knowledge about selecting and reading different types of wood. Participants will also explore examples of traditional carvings including masks, paddles, and house posts to understand how form and meaning connect in Indigenous art practices.
All tools and materials are provided, and each participant will leave with a finished cedar feather mounted on a stand, ready for further design or painting.
